Lab Member Fall 2005 – Spring 2008
Currently a doctoral candidate at Boston University
Alissa majored in biology and chemistry at ASU. As a young student of biology she was naturally interested in a great number of subjects; however, the study of marine biology and conservation has always been of particular interest to her. While with the Gerber lab, she worked on a project to determine the amount of relatedness (using genetic markers) between male and female California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) which inhabit islands found in the Sea of Cortez. By determining the amount of relatedness between groups she hoped to expose the pattern of social grouping for these animals. Her interests also include scientific SCUBA diving and coral reef ecology. In spring of 2009, she embarked on a five month research program in the Caribbean where she learned and studied tropical marine ecology and conservation.
